In the modern marketplace, a new and subtle trend has emerged. It’s called “Kingdom Washing.” Much like “greenwashing”—where companies use environmental slogans to mask unsustainable practices—Kingdom Washing occurs when a business or leader adopts spiritual language, Christian symbols, and “Kingdom” branding to gain trust, all while bypassing the actual ethical standards of the King they claim to serve.

For the marketplace leader, this isn’t just a branding mistake; it is a spiritual crisis.

The Great Misunderstanding

Many believe that the “Kingdom of God” is a club you join by using the right vocabulary. They put a cross on their logo, mention “blessings” in their email signatures, and use “prophetic” language to close deals. They believe that by aligning their brand with the Kingdom, they can reap the rewards of a “Kingdom alliance” without the responsibility of Kingdom righteousness.

But the Scripture provides a sobering reality check for anyone tempted to lead this way.

The Biblical Warning: Matthew 7:21–23

Jesus spoke directly to the heart of Kingdom Washing in the Sermon on the Mount. He didn’t address people who were outsiders; He addressed those who were “active” in His name:

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name… and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’”

The Greek word used for “know” here is ginosko—implying an intimate, shared life. Jesus isn’t impressed by the “prophetic” sales pitch or the “miraculous” profit margins if there is no personal submission to His authority. You can build an empire in His name, but if you haven’t lived according to His character, He does not “know” your business.

The “Lord, Lord” vs. The “Will of the Father”

The marketplace is the ultimate testing ground for this scripture.

  • Saying “Lord, Lord” is easy. It’s marketing. It’s a “Blessed” bio. It’s a “Kingdom-minded” networking event.

  • Doing “The Will of the Father” is difficult. It’s paying a living wage when inflation hits. It’s being transparent about a product defect even if it costs you the contract. It’s refusing to use spiritual manipulation to close a deal.

When we call Him “Lord” but do not do what He says (Luke 6:46), we aren’t just fooling our customers; we are endangering our own standing. The Kingdom is not a branding tool; it is a reign that must first happen in the heart of the leader before it can manifest in the business.

From Washing to Witnessing

The world—and especially the Kenyan marketplace—is tired of slogans. They are looking for the “evidence.” They are looking for the “Josephs” who don’t just talk about God but provide technical, ethical, and innovative solutions to the famines of our time.

Authentic Kingdom leadership requires Dual Citizenship:

  1. Earthly Excellence: Being the most competent, skilled, and reliable professional in your field.

  2. Heavenly Integrity: Being governed by a set of ethics that does not shift with the market.
